The Nigeria Premier Football League returns for the 2026/27 season on August 28 to 30, and the fixture list has already handed fans a rivalry nobody has seen before: Sporting Lagos hosting Ikorodu City in the first top-flight meeting between the two Lagos clubs.
The derby is set for Matchday 2, but it was the fixture that pulled the most attention the moment the schedule dropped. Both clubs are based in Lagos, and neither has met the other in the top division until now, a gap that closes partly because of Remo Stars’ relegation to the lower tier, which reshuffled the state’s top-flight representation heading into the new campaign.
Matchday 2 carries other fixtures worth watching. Enyimba take on Shooting Stars, Kano Pillars host Niger Tornadoes, Rivers United face Katsina United, and Warri Wolves welcome defending champions Rangers International. That last fixture in particular puts Rangers on the road early, one of several tough opening assignments handed to last season’s top three finishers, alongside Enyimba and Kano Pillars.
