South Africa began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Guinea on September 26, marking Pitso Mosimane’s first match back in charge of Bafana Bafana.
Center-back Ime Okon opened the scoring in the 30th minute before Guinea’s Seydouba Cisse equalized, with substitute defender Samukele Kabini netting the 77th-minute winner at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Goalkeeper Kamogelo Sebelebele was named Player of the Match.
“I don’t take credit for those things because we coaches, sometimes, when there’s a goal, we want to sound intelligent,” Mosimane said of Kabini’s impact, adding that the defender “is a big, solid boy. He’s strong.”
On his goalkeeper, Mosimane said, “I was worried about Kamogelo Sebelebele, who’s shorter, on set-pieces. But it was like for like… He figured him out and was the Player of the Match.”
In the other Group D fixture, Kenya and Eritrea drew 1-1 in Nairobi, leaving South Africa atop the group after the opening round.
