Ugo Ugochukwu is now a Formula 3 world champion. The 19-year-old sealed the 2026 FIA Formula 3 title in Madrid on Sunday, finishing second in the season’s final race to edge out rival Freddie Slater by 14 points. For a driver with Nigerian blood running through him, the win lands as more than a trophy.
His mother is Oluchi Onweagba, the supermodel who broke barriers for African fashion on global runways decades ago. His father, Luca Orlandi, is an Italian designer. Ugochukwu himself was born in New York. But it’s the Nigerian side of his story that has fans across the continent claiming this title as their own.
“We did it, FIA F3 Champions,” Ugochukwu said after the race. “No mistakes, brought it home, and super pleased.”
That calm summary undersells a wild championship fight. Ugochukwu arrived at the Madring circuit tied on points with Slater, the Audi junior driver who had spent much of the summer looking like the man to beat. Slater’s title bid unraveled in qualifying. He could only manage 17th and eighth across the two sessions, citing a car that never felt right under him. Ugochukwu, by contrast, qualified fourth and second. The gap was set before a single lap of racing began.
Slater’s weekend then fell apart completely. He crashed out of the first feature race trying to fight back into the points, handing Ugochukwu a share of the championship lead heading into Sunday’s decider. From there, it was about nerve, not speed. Ugochukwu ran a measured second place behind Finland’s Tuukka Taponen, who claimed his maiden F3 win in the same race. Slater finished eighth. The title was gone.
Two race wins. Seven podiums. 159 points to Slater’s 145. Numbers that tell only half the story of a season built on redemption.
Ugochukwu’s first crack at Formula 3 in 2025 was rough. He finished 16th driving for Prema, a result so underwhelming that McLaren dropped him from its junior driver programme at the end of the year. Getting axed by an F1 team’s academy is the kind of setback that ends careers before they properly start. Ugochukwu switched to Campos Racing instead. He answered with a title.
The turnaround wasn’t limited to F3. Over the winter, Ugochukwu also claimed the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy crown in New Zealand, beating Slater to that title too. Add his 2024 Macau Grand Prix win, one of junior motorsport’s most prestigious one-off races, and a picture forms of a driver who has quietly been collecting silverware while the spotlight sat elsewhere.

Now the ladder points upward. Formula 2 is next, and beyond that sits the dream every driver in the junior ranks chases: a seat in Formula 1.
“Formula 2 is, of course, the next logical step up the ladder towards everyone’s dream of Formula 1,” Ugochukwu said. “For now, I am just enjoying this title.”
For Nigeria and for Africa, a new name now sits on the list of drivers to watch on the road to Formula 1. Whether Ugochukwu chooses to lean into that heritage as his career climbs remains a story still being written.
