Miss Tourism East Africa Crowns Winner In Kampala

The inaugural Miss Tourism East Africa pageant crowned its winner at the Kampala Marriott Hotel on September 12, capping a finale that brought together 21 contestants from seven East African territories.

Each of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and Zanzibar sent three representatives to compete. The winner receives 40 million Ugandan shillings in cash, with organizers opting for cash over a vehicle prize to give her flexibility.

“In total we have 21 contestants, each country sending three representatives. This is the inaugural contest,” said organizer and fashion designer Sam Akuaku.

A pre-finale cultural evening hosted by Sheraton Kampala General Manager Jean-Philippe Bittencourt showcased East African cuisine and music. Organizers said future editions will rotate among East African countries.
