The National Theatre of Nigeria held its first-ever creative economy summit outside Lagos on September 11, hosting a two-day event at the Afficent Events Centre in Kano.
The summit was organized by the National Theatre under GM/CEO Tola Akerele, in partnership with the European Union, iDICE and the Kano State Government, and covered funding access, financial literacy and practical skills for creatives.

Speakers included Audu Maikori of Chocolate City Group, Bayo Omoboriowo of Madhouse by Tikera Africa, and Edward Israel-Ayide of Carpe Diem Solutions, addressing an audience of Kano-based creatives.

“The summit exists because that same energy and creativity live in every corner of this country, not only in Lagos,” Akerele said, explaining the decision to hold the event in Kano, long recognized as the home of Kannywood and a hub of performing-arts tradition.

The move signals an explicit push to decentralize Nigeria’s creative-economy resources and opportunities beyond Lagos, extending support to creative hubs across the country’s north.
