Kano State topped Nigeria’s 2026 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination results for the second consecutive year, according to figures released by the National Examination Council on September 27.
Kano recorded 74,413 candidates with at least five credits including English and Mathematics, ahead of Lagos State with 72,496 and Oyo State with 55,543, placing the three states at the top of the national rankings.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s office credited sustained investment in education, noting the state allocated N405.35 billion to education in 2026, about 30 percent of its total N1.478 trillion budget, and spent more than N4.4 billion sponsoring exam candidates, particularly disadvantaged students.
“Kano has maintained the first position in NECO twice in a row making the state as the leading SSCE performer for the two consecutive years, (2025 and 2026) respectively,” the governor’s office said, with Yusuf pledging to “continue to prioritise education through increased funding, improved learning facilities, teacher recruitment and training, scholarships and support for indigent students.”
