African Stars Headline Record 2026 Summer Transfer Window

Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi’s move from Lille to Manchester City for roughly £86 million headlined a busy 2026 summer transfer window for African players, according to Vanguard. The 18-year-old signed a five-year deal in one of the biggest African transfers of the summer.

Fellow Moroccan Ismael Saibari also commanded a big fee, joining Bayern Munich from PSV Eindhoven for around 50 million euros rising to 55 million with add-ons on a contract through June 2031. Ivory Coast’s Christ Inao Oulai moved from Trabzonspor to Fiorentina for 26 million euros plus bonuses at just 20 years old.

Aston Villa made two marquee African signings, landing Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for £47.5 million plus add-ons and 18-year-old compatriot Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for £47 million. Brentford broke their club transfer record for Mali’s Mamadou Sangare, who scored in a 3-0 win over Tottenham soon after arriving.

Nigeria contributed two notable moves: Raphael Onyedika left Club Brugge for Eintracht Frankfurt for 9 million euros, while 18-year-old Zadok Yohanna’s £21.5 million switch from AIK to Brighton and Hove Albion set a new record sale for Swedish football. Ghana’s Caleb Yirenkyi also became a club-record signing at Coventry City after moving from Nordsjaelland.

African players have featured in the Premier League since its 1992 inception, and this season’s arrivals follow a run of strong showings at the 2026 World Cup, where nine of Africa’s ten teams reached the knockout stage. Mohamed Salah’s departure from Liverpool to Turkish club Trabzonspor marked one of the window’s most notable African exits.
