Most Nigerians knew Francis Duru as Ahanna, the cool, dangerous lead of Amaka Igwe’s Rattlesnake. Few knew the man behind him. The veteran actor died in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, aged 57, after what his family called a brief illness. His life off camera was every bit as dramatic as the roles that made him famous.

1. He was born in Cameroon

Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State. He did his primary and secondary schooling there before crossing into Nigeria. One of Nollywood’s most recognisably Igbo faces spent his formative years outside the country.

2. Acting was not his first choice

He wanted to study Law or Mass Communication. He reportedly sat the JAMB exam three times before ending up in Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt. Nollywood can thank that third attempt.

3. A village stay with his grandmother shaped his first role

Before his career took off, Duru spent two years in a village with his late grandmother. When producers from Aba found him living in Choba and cast him in an Igbo-language film, Missing Mark, in 1989, he drew directly on that rural life.

4. He was a campus comedian

At UNIPORT, he was not just an actor. He performed comedy and was a fixture at entertainment events, and has been linked to the early days of Night of a Thousand Laughs.

5. Ola Rotimi scolded him, then cooked for him

In 1992, during the stage play Spokesman for the Oracle, Duru cut his hand breaking glass and hid the injury so he could keep performing. The legendary playwright Ola Rotimi reprimanded him for it. Then Rotimi cooked him a meal and told him he was a good actor who should never let it go to his head. Duru called it one of the most meaningful moments of his career.

6. He met his wife on campus

He met Adokiye while both were students at the University of Port Harcourt. They married in 2003 and had four children.

7. He walked away from Nollywood’s chaos

In 2010, worried about falling standards in film production, he moved to Abuja to focus on other work. He became a sought-after master of ceremonies, consultant, voice-over artist, jingle recorder and acting coach. He also served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria that same year.

8. He held a master’s degree

Duru earned a master’s in Development Communication from Nasarawa State University and was reportedly pursuing further studies. He often warned young actors that fame without training would not last.

9. The UN honoured him

In 2007, he received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award for his positive influence on young people. He worked with UNICEF, USAID, LEAP Africa and COMPASS on children’s education and welfare.

10. His Ahanna got a new face

When Ramsey Nouah remade the film as Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story in 2020, Stan Nze took on the role Duru made iconic in 1995. That same year, Duru won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) at the Best of Nollywood Awards for Mboputa.

11. His son’s death tested his faith

In August 2024, he announced the death of his youngest son, Ifeanyi, aged 15. He served in his church’s youth department and drama team, and in a January 2025 interview said the loss deepened rather than broke his faith. He led a church service the day after the burial. The following week, he said, he caught himself searching the congregation for his son’s face.

He never stopped looking for the boy. Now, father and son are together.
