Editorial policy

This policy explains how Africentra News reports, verifies and presents the news. It applies to everyone who writes, edits or produces content for us.

Accuracy and verification

  • We confirm facts with primary sources, official records or more than one independent source before publication.
  • We attribute information clearly: readers should know where a claim comes from.
  • We distinguish between fact, allegation, analysis and opinion.
  • When a story is still unfolding, we label it Developing story and update it as verified information becomes available.

Sources

We prefer on-the-record sources. We grant anonymity only when a source faces a real risk of harm or retaliation and the information is in the public interest and cannot be obtained otherwise. An editor must know the identity of every anonymous source.

Fairness and right of reply

When we report allegations or criticism, we make a genuine effort to contact the people or organisations involved and include their response, or note that they did not respond.

Independence and conflicts of interest

Our journalists do not accept payment, gifts or favours in exchange for coverage. Staff must declare any personal, financial or political interest that could affect, or appear to affect, their work, and step back from those stories.

Sponsored content

Content paid for by an advertiser or partner is labelled Sponsored content. Sponsors do not influence our independent reporting.

Use of artificial intelligence

  • We may use AI tools to help with research, summarising verified notes, suggesting headlines or preparing first drafts.
  • Every AI-assisted article is reviewed, fact-checked, edited and approved by a human editor before it is published. AI is never used to publish stories automatically.
  • We do not use AI to invent quotes, sources, events or data.
  • AI-generated images are used only as illustrations, never as news photographs of real events, and are labelled AI-generated illustration.

Images and copyright

We use images we own, have licensed, or are permitted to use, and we credit photographers and sources where required.

Sensitive coverage and safety

We take particular care when reporting on violence, conflict, children, victims of crime and health. Where a story affects public safety, we may add a safety note pointing readers to official guidance.

Corrections

We correct errors promptly and transparently. See our Corrections policy.

Accountability

The editor-in-chief, Tiza Joseph, is responsible for this policy. Questions about our standards can be sent to contact@africentra.com.
