In a move that shifts the geopolitical landscape of the Horn of Africa, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state on Friday, December 26, 2025.
The announcement occurred during a live virtual ceremony between Netanyahu, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi. During the broadcast, Netanyahu signed the official declaration of recognition, stating that the relationship between the two nations is “seminal and historic.”
Israel is the first UN member state to formally recognize Somaliland’s sovereignty since it declared independence in 1991.
Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed he would communicate President Abdullahi’s desire to join the Abraham Accords to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The two nations intend to establish full diplomatic relations, including the exchange of ambassadors and the opening of embassies. Meanwhile, Israel have announced plans for immediate partnerships in agriculture, technology, health, and economic development in Somaliland.

Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu on December 26th, 2025 officially recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.

Somaliland, a former British protectorate, originally gained independence on June 26, 1960, and was recognized by 35 countries, including Israel. However, five days later, it voluntarily united with the former Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic.
Following a decade of civil war and the collapse of the Siad Barre regime, Somaliland unilaterally withdrew from the union on May 18, 1991. While it has functioned as a de facto state with its own currency, military, and democratic elections for over 30 years, it remained legally unrecognized by the international community until this week.

The Federal Government of Somalia in Mogadishu has “categorically and unequivocally” rejected the move, calling it a violation of its territorial integrity. In a joint statement, Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti condemned the recognition, warning it could destabilize the region. Conversely, the move is seen as a strategic win for Israel, providing a democratic ally along the critical Red Sea shipping lanes near the Gulf of Aden.
While we awaits the response from the African Union (AU) and other nations, particularly those in the Abraham Accords framework, Africentra will continue to monitor and follow Israel’s lead in the coming weeks.
